BIO

EN

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Rommel Ribeiro was born into a family of accomplished artists in northern Brazil in the mid-1980’s. He grew up surrounded by art and from a young age was inspired by the works of great Brazilian musicians: Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Alceu Valença, Chico César, and Lenine.
In 2006, after releasing “Transcendental”, his first album, he landed in Canada, where he crossed paths with the People Project Band and The SoulJazz Orchestra. It was the perfect opportunity for him to explore music in a multicultural background and to perform in meaningful events, such as Montreal and Ottawa’s Jazz Festivals, Vive Latino, Ottawa Bluesfest, and Toronto Global Groove. While honing his style, Rommel emerged with a mix of popular Brazilian music, afrobeat, reggae, funk, and jazz he put out in his second album “Egológico Recycle”. Created in collaboration with musicians from Ethiopia, Cameroon, France, and Brazil, this exotic disc unites compositions in French, Portuguese and English. The high quality of his compositions, the ability to engender effective, long-lasting partnerships, and his inspired performances resulted in several awards in Canada.
In 2010 he received the “Great Revelation” award at the Festival Nuits d’Afrique and the very first “Diversity Award,” granted by the Arts Council of Montreal and other cultural organizations.
In 2012 he was accepted into the Music Program at Carleton University and was chosen as Radio Canada-CBC 2012-13 “Revelation in World Music.” This last prize opened up so many new doors, where Rommel had the honour of opening for iconic Brazilian singer-songwriter Gilberto Gil at the Festival International de Jazz de Montréal in 2012.
In 2015, Rommel released his album “Nada Direito” and moved to England for an Exchange Program in Music at the University of Liverpool for one year. While in Europe, Rommel promoted “Nada Direito” through solo shows in the United Kingdom, Portugal, France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. Back to Canada in 2016, Rômmel finished his Bachelor of Music Degree at Carleton University. In 2017, Rommel toured in Eastern Canada – the Ontario and Quebec provinces - and then went to the studio to record “Caminho de Vento,” his new album, released in Fall 2018 accompanied by a tour in Brazil.

FR

ABOUT NADA DIREITO

In 2012, I released my 2nd album, Egologico Recycle and I was awarded the title "Revelation CBC/Radio Canada 2012-13 in Word Music". In 2013 CBC invited me to prepare a special show to be broadcast on TV and they also offered me 3 days of free recording sessions at the great "CBC Studio 12" in Montreal, as part of the award.

I selected few original songs created in collaboration with other artists, poets, painters, photographers and designers. My goal was to involve people from different art fields and cultural backgrounds to create a unique music record.

The band (Vovo Saranda, Silvio Modolo, Fabrice Laurent, Francis Covan) and myself had a few rehearsals before the TV performance. On February 7th we had the show and from February 8th to 10th we recorded 10 songs live at CBC Studio 12.

We also had additional recording of sax, trombone, flute (arrangements by Genevieve Lapointe), back vocals, guitars, percussion, sound effect and and 4 special guests. Editing by Diogo Ramos in Montreal and mixing and mastering by Ze Americo Bastos in Rio de Janeiro. Artwork/Graphic design by Wallace Roza and Enrico Lima. Music videos and photos from the original live recordings in the studio, by Dioni Pereira.
